SCOTTISH GOLF BALLS. Information about the early history of golf balls is unfortunately very scarce. According to most records the first balls (if we ignore the story about the shepherd and stones) were probably made of WOOD, and then came the HAIRY, however there are no records of these being used for Golf in Scotland.

Until the mid-19th century, the FEATHERY was the standard golf ball. It was made of cow or horsehide which was stuffed with feathers; most often goose feather. The leather, in order to be easier to work with, was soaked in water. The feathers that were forced into the ball by using a specially designed crutch-handled filling rod were soaked as well. After the ball was carefully hand sewn together, it was left to dry. While the leather shrank, the feathers expanded, which made the ball very hard and compact.

From 1848, golf balls made of gutta-percha gum, called ‘gutties’ began to replace featherys’. Several claims are made about the origin of the gutty.

Coburn Haskell, an American, developed a wound core ball in 1898. In 1899, he and Bertram Work, an employee of the Goodrich rubber company in Ohio, patented the Haskell ball, as it came to be known, in 1899 – a solid core wrapped tightly with rubber threads covered with a layer of gutta-percha. The ball arrived in Britain in 1900.
