Geocache Description:

HAG = Hide and Go. HAG is an annual event on Vancouver island and surrounding islands. This year is our 18th annual celebration. Cache owners hide according to the theme (but doesn't have to be) from November to January. Most are published on the 1st Saturday in February and then we get together to celebrate on the first Saturday in March. It brings lots of creativity and produces some pretty awesome caches. It's a great way to refresh our gameboard. HAG XVIII Theme is 'Phobias'.

Ophidiophobia is a kind of phobia where you have an extreme fear of snakes. It is perfectly normal for adults and children to have fears, but having a simple fear of snakes is different from having a phobia. ‌ Fear of snakes is very common. Half the people in the world feel anxious about snakes.

Night Snakes are pale grey, beige or light brown reptiles. They have brown paired blotches on the dorsum and usually three large black blotches on the neck. The venter is whitish or yellow. The head is flat, with vertical pupils, and a brown bar behind the eyes. The scales are smooth, often with irridescence.

Night snakes are found in dry hot areas of the western United States and British Columbia, Canada. Habitats include cliffs, talus slopes, grasslands, shrub savannas, shrublands, rivers and riparian wetlands.

The saliva of the night snake is mildly venomous, which helps them capture small prey, especially reptiles and amphibians.  Their usual fare consists of lizards, lizard eggs, small snakes (even neonate Rattlesnakes), frogs and toads.

When disturbed, the night snake may flatten its head, coil tightly, and vibrate the tail - appearing as a viper (see photo). However, it is a gentle species that is easily handled. They are considered to be rear-fanged venomous, but not dangerous to humans.

It's a small, secretive snake most often found beneath rocks on rugged hillsides between May and September. As their common name implies, they are primarily nocturnal (active at night).
