MARYLAND'S GEO-BEGINNINGS
CHALLENGE
Most geocachers know that Geocaching began in Oregon, on May 3, 2000, but did you know it took four months for Maryland to get into the game with two caches placed in 2000.
Assateague Island (GC56) was hidden on September 3, 2000. It had 4 DNF's and no finds before being archived on March 20, 2002.
AsSaTEAgue 4 (GC10B) was hidden on December 30, 2000. It also had no finds before being archived on September 18, 2002.
Year 2001 was much better for Maryland with 140 caches placed across the entire state.
Cosca Park Cache (GC150) was Maryland's 3rd cache. It was hidden on January 7, 2001 and the "1st" FTF in Maryland was made by Tommy on January 22, 2001. This cache didn't even last as long as the first two and after 14 finds it was archived on January 1, 2002.
Jusef's Cache (GC1FD) is Maryland's 4th cache and our oldest active cache. It was hidden on February 4, 2001 and the FTF was on the very next day by Excarbon_Recon who noted it was "...found in the rain and snow."
Time has taken a toll on these oldies and now only 28 of the original 140 geocaches published in 2001 still exist today. This map shows their locations.
This challenge cache, is to encourage geocachers to go out and find the remaining active caches in Maryland.
The geocache is hidden at the listed coordinates. To log this cache as found you must complete the challenge described below.
The requirements for completing this challenge:
1) Find 25 of the oldest 30 active geocaches in Maryland. I provided a list of the currrent 30 oldest geocaches.
2) Use the Project-GC Challenge Checker to verify that you qualify for this challenge.
A few notes:
1) If any of the geocaches are owned by you, you may claim them on your list.
2) If you found any 2001 caches, that are now archived, they will NOT be recognized by the Challenge Checker. Archived caches can be used in your list of 25 caches to qualify and see the "5/16/2023 UPDATE:" note for how to check them.
3) A successful run of the Challenge Checker serves as your proof of qualification. The checker will provide a formatted list should you wish to copy/paste one into your log.
4) If you have not yet completed this challenge, you may still find the geocache and sign the log, but you may not log it as a find until you have successfully completed the challenge. Any found-it logs submitted without completing the challenge will be deleted.

Thanks to vogelbird for providing the Project-GC Challenge Checker.
5/16/2023 UPDATE: The Challenge Checker does not recognize caches published in 2001 that are now archived. I made a list containing ALL of the caches published in 2000 and 2001 which you can access as an alternate method to see if you meet the challenge. The list can be accessed at this link.

Congrats to JPatton on the FTF!
