Geocache Description:

This collection of caches has nothing to do with the Church Micro series in the UK. Given that the Australian 2016 census indicates that No Religion and Jedi Knight are the fastest increasing classifications of the optional religion question "What is the person's religion?" it is not surprising that there is surfeit of empty churches that have been repurposed.

Two used 2Bs for the price of one.  One building used to be elsewhere.

The original site for the Methodist Church in Birkenhead was secured in 1876. Birkenhead Methodist Church occupied a block on Birkenhead road, near the intersection of Rann street. The 1881 structure of wood and iron, is about 40 feet long and 24 feet wide. In 1925 the church trustees having a more suitable block of land in nearby Gunn St, decided to have the structure moved there. The church was bolted to several large timber jinkers, and was hauled on to the road by three tractors, where it was placed near the footpath. It was moved along the road after midnight, when the power was cut off, so that no danger would be caused through the roof coming into contact with electric wires across the streets.  The corrugated building at the rear of the block is now a scout hall.

A new church buildng in brick following the English gothic style of architecture was constructed at the Gunn St site.  The front being enriched with rock-face freestone and cement dressings. The building was closed in 1977 and is now a community hall.   Foundation stone has been removed.
