The Gray fox and the raccoon dog are the only members of the Canidae family that are considered true climbers.
They slink at night through long-settled South Florida neighborhoods, where many residents remain unaware of their existence. Like elusive urban ghosts, gray foxes are vigorous if rarely seen inhabitants of Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, Pembroke Pines and many other cities.
While the advance of urban development long ago mostly cleared South Florida of panthers, bears and bobcats, the gray fox remains, the largest native carnivorous mammal likely to trot past your house while you sleep.
