Geocache Description:

As you walk towards this cache you will be able to view and hear the wild Waiwhakaiho River and yes you have to cross it to access the cache! But dont worry as it seems like its not for the faint hearted it is completly safe as long as you follow the crossing rules.......

There are a few different ways you can access this cache, the most popular would be to park and walk from the Mangaoraka car park area and up the Waiwhakaiho track. The other popular option would be to park at the Kaiauai car park and walk in from there (see WP's)  Make sure you stay on the track while finding this cache. Carry on another couple of mins down the track and theres a nice spot for a rest and photo opportunity.

The Waiwhakaiho River is an important river; It provides a habitat for a number of native species including a thriving population of blue duck (Whio).

There is a network of DOC200 traps around the Waiwhakaiho River protecting the blue duck and kiwi population in Egmont National Park. You will see the traps along the side of the tracks feel free to take a look inside the traps but please do not touch as you may accidentally set one off. These traps catch stoats, rats, ferrets and weasels all of which pose a threat to the native bird population.

Plan and prepare

It is important to plan and prepare your trip and be well equipped.

1. Plan your trip: Take a map/track brochure

2. Tell someone responsible where you are going and your estimated return time. See www.adventuresmart.org.nz.

3. Be aware of the weather: Check weather forecasts before you go on 0900 999 24 or www.metservice.com.

4. Know your limits

5. Take sufficient supplies

consider taking a personal locator beacon (available for hire from Taranaki / Egmont National Park Visitor Centre).

Weather on the mountain changes rapidly. You must be well prepared with suitable clothing and equipment for all weather and conditions. Snow, high rainfall and storm damage can make tracks impassable – many rivers and streams are unbridged.

Your safety is your responsibility
