Geocache Description:

Bicycle Race

A race using bicycles or,

A single by the British rock band Queen that was released on their 1978 album Jazz and written by Queen’s lead singer Freddie Mercury. It was released as a double A-side single together with the song “Fat Bottom Girls “ reaching number 11 in the UK Single chart and number 24 in the Billboard top 100 in the US. The song is included in their 1981 Greatest Hits compilation. It is also one of the most downloaded bicycle-themed songs.

The song is notable for its video featuring a bicycle race with nude women at Wimbledon Stadium which was controversial at the time, with the video being edited or even banned in several countries. The song itself has appeared in various media with a bicycle theme.

With the demise of the crossing the Wairau cache, another option to cross the Wairau has emerged. As part of the Whale Trail cycleway from Picton to Kaikoura, a clip-on cycleway will be added to the Wairau river bridge on SH1, giving a safer option for cyclists to cross from Tuamarina to Spring Creek and back again. At the time of placement, construction was well under way and expected to be completed in early 2022. Prior to the cycleway addition, a set of lighted signs (above) at either end of the bridge alerted drivers to possible cyclists on the bridge. Annually there is a bicycle race that crosses this bridge on the way around the 101 km loop. That race however won’t be using the cycleway.
