BIRDING
Also known as bird watching. Over the past 3 years I have come to love Birding. I have found that it is an excellent companion to the Geocaching outtings I have been making, as well as a great help to my mental health during these trying times. While I've only been on a couple of group birding walks, each one has been exhilerating and a much different experience then going alone or with my partner.
I will be hosting a meet and greet at Maplewood Flats for Geocachers on March 26th. Meeting time is at 10:30am at the posted coordinates. We will meet and chat about birding, go over some good resources (See below list) and some tips and tricks for birding in the field. Immediately following this event I will be setting out for a walk to do some birding (and maybe even a bit of geocaching) in the park accessed from the trailhead at the posted coordinates. Any who wish to join me after the event are welcome to do so, but this is not a requirement of the event per geocaching rules.
For this event, nothing is required but yourself. Have you seen a bird before? Do you find birds interesting? Then you are more then qualified to attend this event. If you have a camera or Binoculars, feel free to bring them along to utilize in the birding adventure immediately following this event. While I am by no means an expert in the area of birds, I have been having fun learning as I go. I hope that I can share this fun and excitement with you immediately after this event where you are welcome to join me in exploring this addition to our fun hobby.
A few free apps that while not required for this event, will bolster the experience and help as tools to boost your knowlegde of birds.
Merlin - Identification and information about birds
eBird - Logging and tracking of sightings
BirdNET - Audio Recorder with AI helping in ID'ing birds based off sound
iNaturalist - Logging, Tracking, information about animals and plants
Raptor ID - resources helping with larger bird identification
I gratefully and respectfully acknowledge that this event will be hosted on the traditional, ancestral and unceded lands of the sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nation.
