"dəxʷx̌ʷiwaac" is the Lushootseed language phrase for the "place of whistling". Many words in Lushootseed are related to the enivironment and the salmon fishing and shellfish collecting economy that remains the tradition of the Salish people.
The Swinomish are a Lushootseed-speaking Native American people. Lushootseed, also Puget Sound Salish, is one of the coast Salish languages and is one of the hardest to learn. Past generations of Swinomish were sent to boarding schools, and were forbidden to speak Lushootseed there. Today, Lushootseed is being taught in La Conner schools.
This cache is near the approach to the Rainbow Bridge, which spans the Swinomish channel. The Swinomish village is located at the west end of the bridge, the area which is also called "dəxʷx̌ʷiwaac" ("place of whistling") in the Lushootseed language.
To safely park to retrieve this cache, use one of the three parking areas shown as waypoints on the map. The closest parking is usually available on Caledonia Street. The parking in the town of La Conner lot charges a small fee. The parking area in Pioneer Park closes at dusk.
