L'ORATORIO
L'oratorio della Madonna del Latte sorge completamente circondato dalla campagna novarese nei pressi della frazione Gionzana.
Fu edificato nel XIV secolo per iniziativa della famiglia nobiliare novarese Tettoni, che era feudataria della zona: in origine la chiesetta era chiamata Santa Maria della Scaglia.
Nel 1487-88 due botteghe pittoriche novaresi furono chiamate ad affrescare la chiesa sia sulle pareti laterali (attribuiti a Tommaso Cagnola) che nel catino absidale (attribuiti a Daniele De Bosis) a scopo devozionale per i fedeli.
Raffigurano, oltre allo stemma nobiliare della famiglia, varie scene dalla vita dei santi nonchè di Gesù e Maria: una di queste, in cui Ella allatta il Bambino, dà il nome all'Oratorio.
Sfortunatamente tale affresco, dopo essere stato distaccato dal muro ai primi del '900 per essere montato su un telaio sopra l'altare, e dopo essere stato ripristinato al suo posto originale nel 1967, fu rubato e mai più trovato: oggi in sua vece c'è una riproduzione fotografica.
Nel '700 viene aggiunta la casa per il custode sulla destra della chiesa, nonchè il portichetto antistante l'entrata.
Nel 1829 viene realizzata all'interno una copertura a volta ribassata, che è stata rimossa in tempi recenti.
Nel 2011 infatti tutto l'Oratorio ha subito molti restauri: in molte parti l'intonaco si stava distaccando, c'erano fessurazioni, il pavimento era instabile e il piccolo cimitero sul lato sinistro della chiesa era in condizioni di degrado.
I lavori hanno dato un riordino anche alla zona esterna, con panchine, illuminazione, l'aggiunta di un pozzo, videosorveglianza e cancello di chiusura della strada nelle ore notturne.
LA CACHE
Per trovare la cache dovrete raccogliere 6 piccoli indizi.
1) Al WP1 (coordinate listing) vedrete una data incisa nel cemento, il mese è A.
2) Al WP2 troverete un cippo per i caduti delle due guerre mondiali: alla terza riga, il numero di lettere del nome è B.
3) Al WP3 sarete all'Oratorio vero e proprio:
- contate quanti lampioni presenti sono equipaggiati con telecamera, questo numero è C;
- il numero delle panchine fatte di pietra è D;
- osservate la griglia del pozzo e contate quanti elementi rettilinei (vedi foto) sono presenti in tutto, questo sarà E;
- dentro la chiesa, contate il numero delle capriate, che sarà F.

CONSIGLI LOGISTICI
Da qualunque parte venite, le strade per arrivare a Gionzana sono strette, due auto insieme ci passano solo negli slarghi.
Tutto il giro si può fare in auto, ma data la distanza vi consiglio di farvi una bella passeggiata nella campagna partendo dal parcheggio 1, oppure anche dal parcheggio 2 se siete in bici (1,5 km).
La strada di accesso all'Oratorio ha un cancello automatico che chiude alle 20, sia per le auto che per i pedoni, tuttavia la chiesa è aperta solo dalle 8:45 alle 17.
THE ORATORY
The Oratory "Madonna of the milk", near Novara's hamlet of Gionzana, is completely surrounded by countryside.
It was built in the XVI century on the initiative of the Tettoni noble family of Novara, who were the feudal lords of the area: originally the church was called "Santa Maria della Scaglia".
In 1487-88 two Novara painting workshops were called to fresco the church, both on the side walls (attributed to Tommaso Cagnola) both in the apse (attributed to Daniele De Bosis) for devotional purposes for the faithful.
In addition to the noble coat of arms of the family, the frescoes depict various scenes from the lives of the saints as well as of Jesus and Mary: one of these, in which she breastfeeds the Child, gives the name to the Oratory.
Unfortunately this fresco, after being detached from the wall in the early '900 to be mounted on a frame above the altar, and after being restored to its original place in 1967, was stolen and never found: today there's a photographic reproduction.
In the '700 caretaker's house was added to the right of the church, as well as the small portico in front of the entrance.
In 1829 a lowered vaulted roof was built inside, which was recently removed.
In fact, in 2011 the whole Oratory underwent many restorations: in many parts the plaster was peeling, there were cracks, the floor was unstable and the small cemetery on the left side of the church was in a decaying condition.
The works also gave a reorganization to the external area, with benches, lighting, the addition of a water well, video surveillance and a gate to close the road at night.
THE CACHE
To find the cache you will need to collect 6 small clues.
1) At WP1 (listing coordinates) you will see a date engraved in the concrete, the month is A.
2) At WP2 you will find a memorial stone for the fallen of the two world wars: on the third line, the number of letters of the name is B (in italian is written surname first and name second).
3) At WP3 you will be at the actual Oratory:
- count how many street lamps are equipped with a camera, this number is C;
- the number of benches made of stone is D;
- look at the grid of the water well and count how many straight elements (see photo) are present in total, this will be E;
- inside the church, count the number of trusses, which will be F.

LOGISTIC ADVICES
Wherever you come from, the roads to get to Gionzana are narrow, two cars can pass together only in the some wide places.
The whole tour can be done by car, but given the distance I suggest you take a nice walk in the countryside starting from parking 1, or even from parking 2 if you are by bike (1.5 km).
The access road to the Oratory has an automatic gate that closes at 8 pm, both for cars and for pedestrians, anyway the church is open only from 8:45 am to 5 pm.
