Woolsthorpe Manor tells the story of Newton's time at Woolsthorpe, from his birth and childhood to the discoveries of his Year of Wonders. In the 17th century manor house you can stand in the room where he used a prism to split sunlight into the colours of the rainbow, exploring the nature of light. From the window you can see the apple tree in the orchard which inspired his theory of gravity.

Coming back to the present day, you can discover Newton's science for yourself in the hands-on Science Centre and walk to the village church where he was baptised (while there, why not attempt GC3EFV1 Church Micro 2559...Colsterworth).

For more than 300 years people have come to Woolsthorpe, drawn by his story to find their own inspiration in this place of genius.

The Space Sapling

In 2015, Major Tim Peake travelled to the International Space Station on his mission 'Principia', named after Sir Isaac Newton's most famous work published in 1687. The mission badge was designed by the winner of a Blue Peter competition, and featured a falling apple representing Newton’s theory of gravity.

Pips from the historic apple tree were taken by Tim Peake to the International Space Station where they spent 6 months floating in microgravity as part of the ‘Pips in Space’ project, and then landed back on earth in 2016 to be nurtured into young trees. The UK Space Agency, the National Trust, and the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew worked on the project.

Eight healthy saplings were nurtured by the nurseries at Kew and were planted in various locations; the sapling at Woolsthorpe represents what has been made possible thanks to the discoveries made by Isaac Newton.

Note: The 'space sapling' is currently away being taken care of due to ill health, but will be returning soon!
