Geocache Description:

"I hope to have God on my side but I must have Kentucky."  -   Abraham Lincoln

The year is 1862, Union General William  "Bull" Nelson is in charge of the bussling major supply center of Louisville,  Supplies moving down the Ohio River to the Mississippi and the Louisville and Nashville Railroad are supporting the Union drive deep within southern territory.

A series of eleven forts and two batteries we constructed to protect the southern flank of the City. The typically fort held a minimum of 50 artillerists and 200 infantrymen, with four to six cannon. The forts' lengths were between 550 and 700 feet, with walls fifteen to thirty feet thick, and six to eight feet high. 200 rounds for each gun were available in the forts.

Louisville was never endangered, so the guns never fired, except for salutes. Confederate forces had reached within two miles of the city but were not numerous enough to invade it. On September 30th, Confederate and Union pickets fought at Gilman's Point in St. Matthews and the Confederates were pushed back through Middletown to Floyd's Fork.

The names and locations of the forts are taken from a map of Louisville and It's Defenses, prepared by the Office of U.S. Engineers, dated June 1865 - extract of which is pictured above.

Now back to the present:

This cache is placed in the general vicinity of the fort.   While it doesn't look like much now without the buildings this positin allows for the defense of the north/south L&N rail line and Beargras Creek., to ninclude the railroad bridge crossing the creek.  It was named for Captain Archibald H. Engle of the 13th U.S. Infantry, who died in Georgia in May 1864.

You are looking for a cammo'ed RX Bottle containing only a waterproof log.  A permanent marker works best here ball point and gel pens work too = pencils not so much.   Coordinates have been averaged 100 times to within 8 feet.  Your results may vary so a hint is provided.
