Have you ever wondered about how psychological diagnoses are made? Now is your chance to assume the role of psychologist, and learn a little about this complicated process.
You're going to meet up with two other geocachers to go along with you looking for caches. This is your first meeting with them, and you're feeling a little nervous. You're at the parking lot, getting your geocaching fanny pack together, when you're approached by Sigmund. He's tall and lean, with dark circles under his eyes, moving slowly and carrying a massive Stanley coffee thermos.
"Hi, I'm Sigmund," he says as he shuffles up to you. "I've got to get some coffee. I haven't slept in three nights."
"That's got to be the largest thermos I have ever seen," you respond kindly, slightly admiring someone who could consume that much coffee in one go.
Sigmund takes a long swig, "Yup. I drink at least four pots of coffee a day. I'm so tired during the day I can't function otherwise. I don't sleep so good. I'm dragging now, but I'll be all right once all this caffeine kicks in!"
Just at that moment, Anna shows up. She jumps from her car and rushes over, arms wide open. You're slightly alarmed when she embraces both Sigmund and you with giant hugs, exclaiming, "I'm SO excited to meet you both! You are the BEST ever! I can't wait to find some geocaches!" You notice that Sigmund is blushing in embarassment over the hug.
Sigmund starts to say in a groggy voice, "Yes, it's nice..." but is interrupted by Anna, who holds out her twenty strings of Mardi Gras beads adorning her neck, "Don't you all LOVE my bling?! So festive, right? I always like to stand out when I go geocaching!"
You all decide on your first cache and head into the woods. You feel slightly blinded by Anna's glittery hot pink tights as you walk through the woods. "I've was feeling so down all day, yesterday," she says to you in a sad voice. Abruptly she shifts and says, "But today I'm SO HAPPY!" and at this point she jumps on top of a log and says, "Look at me! I'm on stage! Don't you just LOVE the theatre?" You note that Sigmund's hands are starting to look a little jittery as he looks at his GPS device, and assume that his thermos of coffee is starting to kick in.
Indeed, Sigmund's pace starts to pick up as you near the geocache, and he says, "Thank goodness for this coffee. I would never survive the mornings otherwise."
"Coffee?! I've never tried coffee! Is it really that great? Let me try." Before he can respond, Anna has grabbed the thermos from Sigmund and taken a big swig. Her eyes widen and she makes a slight face, obviously unused to the bitter flavor. But then she takes another gulp before handing it back to Sigmund and saying, "SIGMUND! You are right! I LOVE coffee, too! It's the best!" Then Anna hugs Sigmund, and hugs you too before you've realized what has happened. "You two are my besties! I'm so glad we met this morning!"
The posted coordinates are a place to park. To solve the puzzle, you will need to use codes from the DSM-5 to diagnose Sigmund and Anna. While the DSM-5 is available for use at libraries, it is also possible to google the codes if you figure out the correct diagnosis for each.
