Geocache Description:

#1 Peter Wolfe

The first attempt of an end-to-end hike on the North Country Trail began in 1974 by a former alcoholic, Peter Wolfe. After making the decision to get sober, his first act was to hike the Appalachian Trail, which was a life-changing experience for him. He then decided to hike the full length of the then proposed North County Trail. Peter section hiked the trail from Bennington Vermont to Lake Sakakawea, North Dakota over the course of 7 years between 1974-1981, over 3200 miles.

Peter spent his early years in Connecticut and New York, but ultimately moved to Michigan's Upper Peninsula where he lived the last three years of his life. Peter Wolfe died in the UP in 1990. The Peter Wolfe Chapter of the NCT in the Western UP is named after him.

ABOUT THIS CACHE: This cache is placed along the section of the North Country Trail (NCT: https://northcountrytrail.org/) that runs through Albion, MI by MIGSPMom and Indenyl. The NCT is over 4,700 miles long and runs through eight states. There is quite a bit of foot traffic along the trail so beware of muggles. Every year the NCT association hosts a challenge for you to hike 100 miles. This cache will help you reach that goal.

The Chief Noonday Chapter also hosts their own challenge to hike the 119 miles in Barry, Kalamazoo and Calhoun counties. Check out their page at https://northcountrytrail.org/trail/michigan/cnd/
