The Church asks that the churchyard NOT be accessed during memorial services that occur in the memorial garden where ashes are interred. They also request that you do not enter the churchyard while the preschool children are present (until approx 2 P.M.)
First Pioneers Cemetary
Please ensure you treat the Churchyard with respect, follow the above stated guidelines and remember that a good cacher leaves no trace of their visit.
This cemetery, located on the northeast corner of Church and Mary Streets beside St. George’s Church, was established after the Hudson’s Bay Company Fort was built to the northeast in 1839. Prior to that the Hudson Bay Company cemetery was located near the old Fort location in Derby. That cemetery was eroded into the Fraser River some time ago.
Approximately 30 - 35 people were buried here until the Fort Langley Cemetery, located on Glover Road, was created in the 1880s. When this cemetery was active, wood grave markers were used and they weathered, rotted and disappeared quickly. Another 15 people are named in the Company records as having served in Fort Langley but those burial places are unknown at this time.
The people who were known to have been put to rest here are shown on the rear of the sign near the entrance.

There is a peaceful, slightly overgrown area near the cairn that hides a memorial wall and a bench. Please take your time here and remember those that came before us.
The Fort closed in 1886 and the surrounding land, including the cemetery, was purchased by Alexander Mavis. He sold the land to members of an Anglican congregation in 1900. In 1901, St. George’s Anglican Church was built.

To get credit for this cache you need 2 things :
1 A picture of yourself with your gps, or a facimile of your caching name -
with the rock cairn in the background posted with your log.
2 You need to email the cache owner the last 4 words that appear in the lower left of the brass plaque on the rock cairn that states who erected the monument.
Unfortunately, if you do not have both these or it looks like a photoshop project - I will delete the log. I had one deleted because I spelled some dinosaur name wrong - so there is that!
