This virtual cache is located in the middle of the woods along a Pennsylvania State Game Land (SGL) hiking trail. The hike from the parking lot to the burled tree and back is approximately a 1.5 mile round trip. There is a small elevation change near the start of the hike. You will be looking for a gigantic round burl in a tree right along the walking trail. No bikes or horses are allowed along this section of trail (foot travel only!).
The provided SGL parking lot is located off of Idle Road. Idle Road can be accessed from PA Route 850 (Valley Rd.) from the North side and Lambs Gap Rd. from the South side. Idle Road is unpaved and on the rough side with no winter maintenance provided.
What is a BURL? It is an extraneous growth on a tree. It is not a disease, but beneficial in preserving a damaged or stressed tree.
What causes a BURL? The highly irregular wood growth was most likely caused by stress from a bacterial infection, virus, fungi, or chemical reaction to an insect attack.
Logging Requirements:
The only requirement for this Virtual Reward 3.0 is to post a photo at GZ showing at least a sliver of yourself, a GPSr, or another distinctive object that matches your geocaching profile. Logs that fail to include an acceptable photo will be deleted.
State Game Lands:
Please be familiar with the Game Lands Regulations that apply in this area. A fluorescent orange hat and vest is required November 15 through December 15. Sunday hunting is now allowed three times a year. Hunting occurs other times throughout the year as well. Please check the Pennsylvania Game Commission Web Site for more information.
Limited Cell Phone Service:
Keep in mind that there are sections of this mountain with limited cell phone service. Highly recommend bringing along a handheld GPSr when hiking in this section of State Game Lands.
