Geocache Description:

Welcome to our virtual cache! It will take you on a tour of Pigeon River Provincial Park, starting from the Ontario Travel Information Centre. You will be required to hike the Boardwalk Trail, Finger Point Trail and High Falls Trail. The round-trip hike is around 9km on a variety of terrains; a wooden boardwalk, dirt trails, and staircases. Finger Point Trail does have significant elevation changes, so sturdy footwear is recommended. Plan 3.5 hours for completion of this virtual.

The suggested route to complete this virtual is to start at the posted coordinates and hike to the "End of Boardwalk Trail" waypoint first. This is around 350m one way on an accessible boardwalk that takes you to a viewing platform above the Lake Superior shoreline. After this, hike back until you see the crossover trail on your right; a 500m walk on this dirt trail will lead you to a fork where you should continue straight to the Finger Point Trail. The Finger Point Trail is a 2.5km one-way trail that provides panoramic views of Lake Superior. Proceed to the "Finger Point Trail Lookout" waypoint. On your way back down, you will come back to the fork in the trail, now stay right and proceed towards the High Falls Trail. To get to the High Falls Trail, you will take a tunnel underneath the highway. The High Falls trail is a 2km loop that provides a fantastic view of High Falls and the Pigeon River. When at High Falls, you may find yourself talking to people across the way that are in Minnesota, U.S.A. If you go right at the fork, you will proceed to the "High Falls" waypoint first and go down wooden stairs. If you go left at the fork you will proceed to the "Chimney Site" waypoint first and go up wooden stairs. All trails are well marked. A map of the trail system is located at the posted coordinates.

Please carefully read the requirements that must be completed to log this virtual.

1. Five photos must be taken and uploaded to your found it log. A photo is required at the posted coordinates as well as at each of the four additional waypoints. Each photo must contain you physically holding your caching name at that location, as well as yourself (showing your face is optional) or an item unique to your caching team (your GPS, a personalized trackable, signature swag, etc). Digitally altering photos to add your caching name is not permitted, so please plan accordingly. The requirements for each photo are as follows:

  • At the posted coordinates, please take a photo of yourself standing in the middle of the arch.
  • At the  "End of Boardwalk Trail" waypoint, please take a photo of yourself standing next to The Great Lake Superior sign with some of the lake visible in the background.
  • At the "Finger Point Trail Lookout" waypoint, please take a photo of yourself standing or sitting on the Lake Superior-shaped bench with part of the bay visible in the background.
  • At the "High Falls" waypoint, please take a photo of yourself standing at the fence corner with the falls visible in the background.
  • At the "Chimney Site" waypoint, please take a photo of yourself with the chimney. You may wish to sit on the ledge or stand in front.

When uploading the photos to your cache log, you are encouraged to name each photo in the following fashion - "Waypoint Name - Caching Name" For example, Posted Coordinates - Q and A.  This will distinguish the photo requirements from any other photos you may wish to upload from your hike. Five unique photos are required to be uploaded for each caching team. A group name or shared photos of multiple cache members are not permitted.

To give you an idea of what is expected,  sample photos of "A" at each of the waypoints are uploaded to the cache page.

2. At three of the waypoints - End of Boardwalk Trail, Finger Point Trail Lookout and High Falls - you will see metal sculptures. Different objects and shapes are incorporated into these sculptures. Try to find a total of 5 different things incorporated into these artworks and use either email or message centre to let us know your 5 findings (Please do not share these in your found it log).

For example, in the metal sculpture at the "End of Boardwalk Trail" waypoint, one thing that can be seen incorporated into the piece is horses.

Please upload your photos and send your answers to the second question within 48 hours of logging the cache as found. Failure to do so will result in the deletion of your found it log.

We hope that you enjoy the hike, the views and the unique Difficulty/Terrain combo that this virtual provides!
