O Castelo de Santa Maria da Feira é um dos mais notáveis monumentos militares portugueses. A diversidade dos seus recursos defensivos, utilizados entre os séculos XI e XVI, fazem dele uma peça única da nossa arquitetura militar. É um símbolo do concelho e de identidade nacional, e a partir de 1910 o castelo foi classificado como Monumento Nacional.
Ao longo da História, desempenhou várias tarefas: terá sido erguido no espaço anteriormente ocupado por um templo indígena que era dedicado ao deus Bandeveluco-Toiraeco, posteriormente castro de ocupação romana, baluarte contra as invasões normandas, forte militar na época da Reconquista, e habitação de famílias reais e nobres.
Para além disso, há quem defenda que Portugal nasceu no Castelo da Feira. O Castelo de Santa Maria, sob o domínio do nobre Ermígio Moniz, desempenhou um papel importante na articulação política e militar de D. Afonso Henriques, razão pela qual se afirma que o castelo da Feira é o verdadeiro berço da independência de Portugal.

The Castle of Santa Maria da Feira is one of the most notable portuguese military monuments. The diversity of its defensive resources, used between the 11th and 16th centuries, make it a unique piece of our military architecture. It is a symbol of the municipality and of national identity. It has been listed as a National monument since 1910.
Throughout history, it performed several tasks: it was erected in the space previously occupied by an indigenous temple that was dedicated to the god Bandeveluco-Toiraeco, later it was fortified by Roman occupation, then a bulwark against the Norman invasions, a military fort at the time of the Reconquest, and housing of royal and noble families.
In addition, there are those who argue that Portugal was born in Castelo da Feira. This castle, under the domain of the noble Ermígio Moniz, played an important role in the political and military articulation of D. Afonso Henriques, which is why it is said that the castle of Feira is the true cradle of Portugal’ independence.
