The 419 Squadron was formed in 1941 with John "Moose" Fulton as the first commanding officer of the unit. Fulton, a Kamloops resident, was highly esteemed for his ambition, flying skills and tremendous leadership ability, which eventually earned him the rank of Wing Commander.
The name "Moose" is used in the Squadron's emblem and motto. The Motto is Mossa Aswayita (Cree): Beware the Moose.
The tradition of squadron commanders bearing the nickname "Moose" was instituted after Fulton was killed in action in July 1942 (age 29). Squadron personnel are affectionately known as "moosemen", and this tradition continues to this day.
In 1944 Canada’s Governor General named The Kamloops airport Fulton Field, in in honor of the local hero, John Fulton.
