In 1915, Vulcan Iron Works built the steam engine known officially as 0-4-0T, Locomotive 9, at the request of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad to handle coal hauling duties from colleries in Nanticoke, then Exeter and finally Wanamie.
Nick-named the "Lokie," this engine is a narrow gauge engine, perfect for hauling coal along the mountains and valleys of the Scranton area. 1969 saw the end of steam hauling in Wanamie, so the Lokie was moved to New Jersey to work, and then eventually Michigan. Thanks to the efforts of many in the local community, this engine was returned to the Valley for preservation and restoration. Located on the grounds of the former Huber Breaker, it will take many years to bring this engine back to life.
The Huber Breaker was built in 1939, and handled up to 7000 tons of coal a day. Owned and operated by the Blue Coal Corporation, the former state-of-the-art Breaker was out of business by1976 It was torn down and sold for scrap in 2014, and the grounds declared contaminated. Now the Huber's fields are the site of Miner's Memorial Park and home to the Lokie.
