The United Baptist Church (at the listed coordinates) is believed to be the oldest building in Charleston, Maine. It is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. A small congregation still worships here weekly.
A traditional Baptist meetinghouse, built about 1830, was modified in the late 1890’s. It was raised and a vestry was built under it, so now the sanctuary is on the second floor. There is a picture of this happening in the 1981 edition of “Paper Talks” magazine.
The Free Temple Baptist Church and the Free Baptist Church combined to become the United Baptist Church in 1911.
The Rev. John Higgins, who is buried in the Village Cemetery located next to the church, made many contributions to Charleston. These included a hotel, Higgins Classical Institute, an observatory, and the Ampitheater for water supply.
Unfortunately, the plaque commemorating the church being placed on the National Registry is inside the church, which will probably be locked when you are there. If you would like a tour of the church, please contact me to set up an appointment.
