Geocache Description:

Port cities, by their very nature, attract people from all around the world, and Prince Rupert is no exception.  Of course, the Ts'msyen (Tsimshian) nations have gathered, worked and lived on these lands for millenia. Beginning in the early 1800's, sea-faring folk from other nations began establishing or building up already existing coastal trading posts, resupply centres, and small communities. Then in the early 1900's, the railway came to the area, the Grand Trunk Pacific railway to be precise, following the vision of opening a new port of call for goods to be shipped to and from Asian markets. With the railway came workers of all descriptions and nationalities, and as the settlement, then community, then city grew, populations stayed. Now Prince Rupert is the 3rd largest port city in Canada, and provides the beginnings of the fastest sea-faring route to Asia.

Amongst our city's resident population are folks from the British Isles, western and eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas, Australia..., all proud of their heritage, and all a part of this wonderful place.

This virtual brings you to the city's Mariners' Memorial Park, a testiment to those who have lived, and died, on and near the ocean, with its "ancient mariner" perpetually staring out to sea and the small fishing vessel that crossed the ocean unmanned.  It is a pretty park, a great place for picnics and playing, and for adding your name to the history of the place, after a fashion.

To claim this virtual, you need do only three things: answer two questions and post a picture announcing, proudly, loudly, where your roots are to be found. The questions can be emailed or messaged to me, and the photo must be posted as part of your online log. So here goes:

Question one: To the north of the posted coordinates is a small hut enclosing a fishing boat. What is the name of the city that the small boat came from?

Question two: There is a small monument with five flagpoles and a large anchor near the given coordinates. To whom is the monument dedicated?

Send me the answer to these two questions.  You do not need to wait for my response before posting your online log. If there is a mistake, I will reach out to you.

Requirement three: At the posted coordinates you will find an unusual place to sit. This should be at the high point in the park. Make a sign, a placard, a note stating where your roots are found.  For instance, if I were completing the image, I would have a sign saying "I come from Wales, Cymru am byth". Take a photo of your sign on the seat (and the photo could, but does not have to, include your image, or your favourite avatar, GPSr, TB or whathaveyou), and post it in your log. Log entries without this required photo will have me reaching out to you to remind you to add it in. Unedited logs at this point will be, regretfully, deleted.

Diolch yn fawr iawn, thank you so much for your presence here in the "City of Rainbows".

I acknowledge that this virtual cache is located on the traditional, ancestral, unceded territory of the Ts'msyen people,  and I am grateful for their stewardship of this land and their hospitality which allows us to live, work and play here.
