Geocache Description:

During a recent visit to Cornwall, we met local friends and took our Geohounds on a fab walk to see Ding Dong.  The weather was atrocious but we pushed on and were rewarded by this fablulous piece of Cornish history.

The Ding Dong mines lie in an old and extensive mining area situated in the parish of Madron, Cornwall.

The Ding Dong mine was created in 1813 by combining 16 smaller mines in the area.  By the middle of the 18th century at least seven small concerns had sprung up although the name Ding Dong did not become the usual name until after the turn of the 19th century.  In 1814 it was reopened and worked until 11 July 1877, when an attempt to sell it at auction as an active mine failed.

The structure at GZ is the Greenburrow pumping engine house.  It was built in 1865 to pump water from the Greenburrow Shaft. The engine, a 40-inch cylinder pumping engine, had previously been in use over North Killiow Shaft.

The structure is now a grade II listed building.

To enable you to log this as a find:

  • During your visit, take a photo of either yourself, your GPSr or a sign with your caching name on it, with a view of at least part of the engine building itself in the background. If you use a sign, please make sure it is readable in the picture so check your photo before leaving.
  • Within 7 days of logging on-line, this photo to your log.
  • For those who visit in a group, please do not just refer to another photo of you on a different log, without uploading a photo to your log too. All on-line logs must have a photo as described.
  • Please play within the spirit of the game and make your way to the structure-Photos with it in the distance will not qualify and logs will be deleted.

When I visited this myself, we parked at the recommended parking then took the path heading north East.
