Några glimtar ur hymnen O store Guds historia.

Sångens författare Carl Boberg föddes den 16 augusti 1859 i ett hus vid Sjögatan i Mönsterås. Huset flyttades i början av 1900-talet till sin nuvarande plats vid Kuggåsvägen, snett emot Kuggåskyrkan. Boberg blev i nu nämnd ordning, sjöman, slöjdlärare, pastor (den förste i Mönsterås Missionsförsamling), redaktör, poet, riksdagsman. Han avled den 7 januari 1940 och vilar på Mönsterås gamla kyrkogård.

Han skrev hundratals dikter, naturlyriska lovsånger och psalmer. Han och Linda Sandell bidrog med många psalmer i Missionsförbundets första psalmbok. Många av hans poem blev tonsatta, bland annat lovsången O store Gud som nu sjungs i alla världsdelar. Första versen har satts på pränt på ett femtiotal språk. Sången lär vara den mest framförda och spelade lovsången i världen.

Nu till sångens historia: Texten publicerades första gången i Mönsteråstidningen den 13 mars 1886. Boberg säger själv att han skrev den sommaren 1885. Texten med musik dök upp första gången den 16 februari 1891 i tidningen Sanningsvittnet. Melodin var då i 3/4-takt. I den form vi nu känner den har melodin sjungits och spelats sedan den trycktes i Missionsförbundets första sångbok 1894. Första publicerandet av lovsången i en sångbok kom dock redan 1890 i USA. Den är på svenska och troligen utgiven av och för emigranterna där. Sången har nio verser, men alla verserna finns inspelade bara på den år 2000 av museet i Mönsterås utgivna CD:n.

Sångerna översattes till tyska 1907 aven estländare, Manfred von Glehn. Fem år senare kom den på ryska i St Petersburg. Översättningen gjordes av prästen Ivan S Prokhanoff, det moderna Rysslands Martin Luther. Sången ingick i en skrift med titeln Cymbaler. År 1922 sammanställdes flera av hans sånghäften, däribland nyssnämnda till en större bok betitlad En kristens sånger. Den publicerades på ryska i New York av Prokhanoffs vänner i det amerikanska bibelsällskapet.

Det engelska missionärsparet Hine kom genom boken i kontakt med sången och använde den oerhört mycket i evangelisationsarbetet i västra Ukraina. Stuart Hine översatte tre verser till engelska på trettiotalet. När andra världskriget utbröt återvände Hinetill England där fjärde versen tillkom 1948. Hela den engelska sången trycktes i Sovjet 1949. Kopior av sången beställdes av missionärer från hela världen. En av dessa kopior kom 1954 till Billy Graham-teamet. Första gången sjöng de den i Toronto i Kanada 1955. How Great Thou Art har sedan dess varit sång nr 1 i Korstågs-sångboken.

Nu några citat som visar sångens spridning redan i början av femtiotalet: ”År 1951 sjöngs sången fyra gånger i Nya Zeelands radio, 1952 kom begäran om sången från hela landet”, ”Redan 1953 var sången spridd i Indien”, ”1954 hördes en indianstam från Assam sjunga sången”, ”1951 sjöngs sången regelbundet över det centralafrikanska radionätet så att miljoner afrikaner kunde höra den från sina primitiva mottagare”.

The song's author, Carl Boberg, was born on 16 August 1859 in a house on Sjögatan in Mönsterås. The house was moved at the beginning of the 20th century to its current location at Kuggåsvägen, diagonally across from Kuggåskyrkan. Boberg became, in the order just mentioned, sailor, crafts teacher, pastor (the first in Mönsterås Mission congregation), editor, poet, member of parliament. He died on 7 January 1940 and rests in Mönsterå's old cemetery.

He wrote hundreds of poems, lyrical hymns and hymns. He and Linda Sandell contributed many hymns to the Missionary Association's first hymn book. Many of his poems were set to music, including the hymn O great God, which is now sung in all parts of the world. The first verse has been printed in about fifty languages. The song is said to be the most performed and played hymn in the world.

Now to the song's history: The text was first published in the Mönsterås newspaper on March 13, 1886. Boberg himself says that he wrote it in the summer of 1885. The text with music first appeared on February 16, 1891 in the newspaper Sanningsvittnet. The melody was then in 3/4 time. In the form we know it now, the melody has been sung and played since it was printed in the Missionary Association's first songbook in 1894. However, the first publication of the hymn in a songbook came as early as 1890 in the United States. It is in Swedish and probably published by and for the emigrants there. The song has nine verses, but all the verses are recorded only on the CD published in 2000 by the museum in Mönsterås.

The songs were translated into German in 1907 by the Estonian, Manfred von Glehn. Five years later it appeared in Russian in St. Petersburg. The translation was made by the priest Ivan S Prokhanoff, the Martin Luther of modern Russia. The song was included in a writing entitled Cymbals. In 1922, several of his songbooks, including the one just mentioned, were compiled into a larger book entitled A Christian's Songs. It was published in Russian in New York by Prokhanoff's friends in the American Bible Society.

The English missionary couple Hine came into contact with the song through the book and used it immensely in the evangelization work in western Ukraine. Stuart Hine translated three verses into English in the thirties. When World War II broke out, Hine returned to England where the fourth verse was added in 1948. The entire English song was printed in the Soviet Union in 1949. Copies of the song were ordered by missionaries from all over the world. One of these copies came in 1954 to the Billy Graham team. The first time they sang it in Toronto, Canada in 1955. How Great Thou Art has since been song No. 1 in the Crusade songbook.

Now some quotes that show the spread of the song already in the early fifties: "In 1951 the song was sung four times on New Zealand radio, in 1952 requests for the song came from all over the country", "Already in 1953 the song was spread in India", "In 1954 an Indian tribe was heard from Assam sing the song”, “In 1951 the song was regularly sung over the Central African radio network so that millions of Africans could hear it from their primitive receivers”.
