Pecherei ist ein seit Jahrhunderten übliches Handwerk, welches der Gewinnung von Harz von Föhrenbäumen dient. Der Stamm des Baumes wird oberflächlich verwundet, um so den Harzfluss künstlich anzuregen. Das gewonnene Harz, auch Pech genannt, wird in Raffinerien und Siedereien zu Terpentinöl und Kolophonium verarbeitet. Diese Zwischenprodukte waren bis in die zweite Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts die Grundlage zur industriellen Erzeugung von Papier, Lacken, Farben, Seife und vielen anderen Produkten.
Das Pechergewerbe hat über Jahrhunderte die Landschaft, Wirtschaft und Kultur der Region des südöstlichen Niederösterreichs geprägt. Eng verknüpft ist sie mit dem Vorkommen von Föhren, insbesondere Schwarzföhren. Das Verbreitungsareal dieser Föhrenart erstreckt sich von der Stadtgrenze Wiens bis ins Wechselgebiet und die Ebene des Steinfeldes, wobei viele Flächen künstlich angelegt wurden. Die Pecherei bildete für tausende Familien im südöstlichen Niederösterreich über Jahrhunderte hinweg eine wichtige Einnahmequelle und ist bis heute in den Bezirken Mödling, Baden, Wiener Neustadt und Neunkirchen anzutreffen. Das Handwerk wird von einer an die nächste Generation innerhalb des Familien- und Freundeskreises mündlich weitergegeben. Schriftliche Quellen sind kaum zu finden.
Die Pecherei ist seit dem Mittelalter direkt oder indirekt belegt, beispielsweise über Flurnamen, und erfuhr ab dem 18. Jahrhundert eine spezielle Förderung. Das heute in Österreich gewonnene Pech wird mit den gleichen traditionell überlieferten Arbeitstechniken wie schon vor Jahrhunderten erzeugt. Viele Betriebe konnten jedoch der starken Konkurrenz durch Billigimporte und kostengünstigere heimische Produkte aus Mineralöl nicht standhalten und mussten zusperren. Heute gibt es nur noch acht Pecher*innen in Österreich und einen einzigen verarbeitenden Betrieb. Der weitere Fortbestand der Pecherei für kommende Generationen ist derzeit nicht gewährleistet, da sie sich rein wirtschaftlich kaum rentiert. In vielen anderen Regionen Europas ist die Pecherei bereits ausgestorben.
Matzendorf-Hölles, Niederösterreich, Austria Der "Pecherpfad Hölles" wurde 1997 von einer Initiatorengruppe in einem von der Gemeinde Matzendorf-Hölles zur Verfügung gestellten Waldgrundstück am nördlichen Rand des Steinfeldes im Bezirk Wiener Neustadt gegründet. Die Initiatoren veranstalten für Interessierte Schauführungen und nehmen an kulturellen Aktivitäten teil. Mittlerweile hat sich der Pecherpfad Hölles zu einem beliebten Ausflugsziel, weit über die Grenzen des Bezirkes hinaus, entwickelt.

RESIN EXTRACTION IN LOWER AUSTRIA

Resin extraction from black pines, also called Austrian pines, has been a common trade for centuries. The surface of the tree trunk is wounded to artificially stimulate the flow of resin. The resin thus collected is then processed in refineries and boiling houses to make turpentine oil and rosin, also known as colophony. Until the second half of the 20th century, these intermediate products served as the basis for the industrial manufacture of paper, lacquer, paint, soap, and many other products.
The resin-extraction trade has for centuries left its mark on the landscape, economy, and culture of south-eastern Lower Austria. It is closely linked with the occurrence of pines, in particular black pines. The dispersal area of this type of pine extends from the city limits of Vienna south to the Wechsel region and the plains of the Steinfeld, although many of the growing areas are man-made. For thousands of families in south-eastern Lower Austria, resin extraction represented an important source of income for a matter of centuries and is still practised in the districts of Mödling, Baden, Wiener Neustadt, and Neunkirchen. This trade is passed on orally from one generation to the next within families and circles of friends. Written sources are scant.
There is direct or indirect documentation of resin extraction going back to the Middle Ages, such as in the names of land parcels, and the trade was especially promoted by landowners beginning in the 18th century. The resin extracted in Austria today is produced with the same traditional techniques that have been passed down for centuries. However, many businesses were not able to withstand the strong competition of cheap imports and more economical local products made of mineral oil and were forced to close down. Today, only eight resin extractors remain in Austria and a single active business. The continued existence of resin extracting for future generations is presently not ensured, as the trade is scarcely profitable. In many regions of Europe, resin extraction as a trade has already died out.
Matzendorf-Hölles, Lower Austria, Austria The "Pecherpfad Hölles" was founded in 1997 by a group of initiators in a forest plot made available by the municipality of Matzendorf-Hölles on the northern edge of the Steinfeld in the district of Wiener Neustadt. The initiators organize guided tours for those who are interested and take part in cultural activities. In the meantime, the Pecherpfad Hölles has developed into a popular excursion destination far beyond the borders of the district.
