The Westgate Bridge
The Westgate Bridge is one of the most recognised structures in the great city of Melbourne.
Construction started in 1968, and it was opened in 1978. The bridge construction cost $220 million.
The bridge has a total length of 2,583 meters (twice as long as the Sydney Harbour Bridge), with the main span being 336 meters long. The bridge is the fifth-longest bridge in Australia. With a road deck clearing the water at 59 meters, it is one of the highest road decks in Australia.
At 11.50 am on October 15, 1970, a span of the Westgate Bridge collapsed, resulting in the death of 35 men working on the construction of the bridge at the time. This is the worst workplace accident in Australia's history, and may it remain that way. A Royal Commission was conducted into the collapse of the section of the bridge.
