Iz veje obroč
plete par spretnih rok
šopek ob šopek
po sedem zvezdnatih rož
v krog, kot dni je v letu
naokrog –
v kranceljček,
ki da zaščitno moč:
za srečo in, kjer je treba, v pomoč.
O kresi, ko dan se obesi –
na sončni obrat –
od vrat do vrat
varje hiše in ljudi
kranceljček zlat.
Venčki sv. Ivana so značilni za Kras na tej in oni strani meje. Šega
temelji na ljudskem verovanju v magično in zdravilno moč rastlin,
nabranih 23. junija – na kresni večer. Dekleta in žene so spletale venčke
iz ostre homulice ali rumenih križcev. Nato so jih razobesile na vhodna
vrata hiš, da – kot izhaja iz starodavnega poganskega verovanja –
varujejo ljudi in njihove domove pred zlimi silami, ognjem in kačami,
ohranjajo moč sonca ter prinašajo srečo.
Spletanje venčkov sv. Ivana je od leta 2013 vpisano v slovenski Register
žive kulturne dediščine.

V Štanjelu smo ta običaj obudili pred dobrima dvema desetletjema. Da se običaj širi in prenaša na mlajše rodove skrbi pred nekaj leti ustanovljeno Društvo VENČEK IZ ŠTANJELA. Vsako leto zadnjo nedeljo pred 24.junijem,ko goduje sv. Ivan, društvo organizira delavnice spletanja venčkov za domačine in obiskovalce. Po delavnicah se najlepše venčke tudi nagradi.
Ko se dan prevesi v večer, odslužene venčke zakurimo na vrhu Štanjelskega griča na Gledanici, po tem ko smo na njihvo mesto postavili venčke s svežo energijo.
Koordinate vas pripeljejo na markantno točko Štanjela. Poleg drugih objektov prepoznavnih za Štanjel je v bližini tudi galerija v kateri je bilo ustanovljeno Društva VENČEK IZ ŠTANJELA.

A WREATH FROM ŠTANJEL
A pair of skilful hands
weaves stems
bunch by bunch
of seven starry flowers
into a circle
numbering the days of the year –
into a wreath
that protects,
brings luck and, when needed, help.
At solstice, when the day hangs
on the turn of the sun,
from door to door
the golden wreath
protects people and dwellings.
St John's wreaths are characteristic of the Karst area, on both sides of
the Slovene-Italian border. The custom is rooted in folk belief in the
magic and curative power of plants collected on 23 June, when the
summer solstice is celebrated. Girls and women would weave wreaths
from the yellow flowering plant biting stonecrop. These were then hung
on the front door of the house – in line with old pagan belief – to protect
the residents and their home against evil forces, fire and snakes, to
preserve the power of the sun, and to bring good fortune.
This custom was revived in Štanjel in the late 1990s.
Weaving St John's wreaths has been entered in the Slovene Register of
Living Cultural Heritage since 2013.

The VENČEK FROM ŠTANJEL Association, founded a few years ago, is concerned with spreading the custom and passing it on to younger generations. Every year on the last Sunday before June 24, when St. Ivan, the association organizes wreath-making workshops for locals and visitors. After the workshops, the most beautiful wreaths are also awarded.
When the day turns to evening, we burn the spent wreaths on the top of the Štanjelski hill at Gledanica, after placing wreaths with fresh energy in their place.
The coordinates bring you to the striking point of Štanjela. In addition to other buildings recognizable for Štanjel, there is also a gallery in the vicinity where the Association VENČEK FROM ŠTANJEL was founded.
