I had the priviledge to grow up with music lessons and to learn to play the piano. Even though I no longer play regularly, it is a skill I cherish and one that I enjoy passing on to my own son. Currently, my son is learning techniques for composition and he is taught several different ideas for how you can transform a motif, or melody, to create a new song. Some of these techniques include:
- Repetition - repeat your motif again
- Transposition - move the notes in your motif up or down
- Retrograde - play your motif backwards
- Inversion - play your motif upside down (if your melody goes up 3 semi-tones, go down 3 semi-tones instead)
- Articulations - change the style of your motif, e.g. from legato (smooth) to staccato (short notes)
- Fragmentation - use fragments of your motif in different ways
Of course there are never any strict rules for music composition. At the end of the day the composer should just write what they think sounds good!
Finding this geocache will require a little music composition analysis on your part. Below is an original composition that I have titled A Melodious Geocache and I hope you enjoy it! If you are musically inclined yourself, feel free to try it out on your instrument of choice but playing or hearing it is not required to solve this puzzle. This puzzle can be solved with only basic understanding of music notation.
You are solving for coordinates of the form: N xx° xx.xxx W xxx° xx.xxx
Good Luck! 🎵
