On December 8, 1941, the same day that Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, Japanese forces began air attacks on Guam. Two days later, 10 December, around 6,000 soldiers landed on Guam forcing the surrender of U.S. forces at 5:45 am that day. Guam would remain under Japanese control for 31 months until July 21, 1944, when U.S. forces began their liberation of the island. By August 10, 1944, U.S. forces had successfully retaken Guam.
