Welcome to the Truro Public Library - Little Library
2012 was a year of big change for Cape Cod librarian Tricia Ford. She began her directorship at the Truro library in April of that year and got married in June. A month or so later she was “pickin” through a friend’s yard sale and she came across an old bird feeder that had seen better days but had the right dimensions to be converted into a free “little library” that she envisioned putting on the front porch of her new library. The library open hours were limited and Tricia couldn’t stand the thought of some reader having a “book emergency” when the library was closed.
Now the friend who was selling the bird feeder was an elderly gentleman named Jim who spent most of his time at the dump or flea markets collecting all kinds of things and reselling or repurposing things. Tricia asked him how much he wanted for the old bird feeder and was taken aback to hear “25 bucks”.
But then Jim changed his mind and said “Never mind, Trish, you can have it. I didn’t bring a gift when you got married, so I won’t take any money for it”. Tricia grabbed it and came home to her puzzled husband, carrying the tardy wedding “gift”.
After hearing the story, her clever brother-in-law Steve McCalligett offered to remake the bird house, and he exceeded all expectations. He inserted a window, installed a door with a latch, and attached a sturdy base to keep it steady. Under his capable hands, he turned an old bird cage into a work of folk art.
Now it serves hundreds of people during times when the library is closed.
This is a great location, great library, and great little library. Caching with little ones in tow? Drive down the parking lot and visit Puma Park, a wonderful playground!
Edit as of 8/12/23:
Sadly, the container has gone missing 3 times. We have replaced with a more “traditional” container. Coords adjusted and updated. Please stop and visit the LFL on the front porch of the building, to keep the spirit of the cache alive!
Congratulations to CaseyToo for the FTF
