There is nothing at this location. (It looks like a great place for a cache, but there are No Trespassing signs everywhere.) You must solve the puzzle below to find the real final coordinates.
Our favorite geocaching chemistry student was happy that his Meemaw came to visit him at college, especially since she was cooking her famous stuffed shells recipe. He watched as Meemaw added 2 tablespoons of salt to the gallon of water she would cook the pasta in.
"That seems like a lot of salt, Meemaw. Why do you add it?" he asked.
"It raises the boiling point, so the pasta cooks faster" she replied.
Our curious student got out pencil, paper, and calculator, then he proceeded to calculate how much the temperature would go up.
He said "Look here, Meemaw, this is how much the temperature would go up. How much difference would that make?"
"Well, I don't know" she replied. "But I know it also makes the water boil sooner."
Out came the pencil, paper and calculator again, as the student scientist calculated how big the difference in heating times was.
"Look here, Meemaw, this is how much time you would save."
Meemaw muttered something about smart aleck college boys, then finished cooking. Our favorite chemistry student didn't hear her, as he was too busy admiring his calculations. But he would always wonder why Meemaw never cooked for him again when she visited.
For the North coordinate: You need to calculate the increase in boiling point (in degrees C) caused by adding 2 tablespoons (35 grams) of sodium chloride (molecular weight 58.443 g/mole) to 1 gallon (3.785 kilograms) of water. Use Kb of 0.512 (°C - kg) / mol
Subtract the value you get from the minutes portion of the North coordinate given on the cache page.
For the West coordinate: You need to calculate the decrease in time (in minutes) required to raise the same salt solution from 20 °C to its boiling point compared to the time for raising pure water to its boiling point of 100 °C. For water, use heat capacity, cP = 1.006 cal / (g-°C), and for the salt solution use cP = 0.992 cal /(g-°C). The heat given off by the stove burner is 25,000 cal / min.
Subtract the value you get from the minutes portion of the given West coordinate.
This section of the Montour Trail can get busy at times, so please be aware of others. You are searching for a small lock and lock container. Bring your own pen, please.
As always, cache safely and have fun!
