The Boer War Memorial in Bathurst highlights the controversy of Lord Kitchener and Lieutenant Peter Handcock, who was born at Peel, near Bathurst. He was executed in South Africa in 1902 for allegedly murdering Boer prisoners. His name is conspicuous at the bottom of the memorial after it was reinstated in 1964 (its lettering obviously newer than the other names). Handcock’s name was supposedly removed before Lord Horatio Kitchener – commander of British troops in the Boer war – personally unveiled the memorial in January 1910. Handcock and Harry “Breaker” Morant, also executed, claimed in their defence to be acting under Kitchener’s orders.
