The Plains Bison (genus Bison, species Bison) once roamed across this area in large herds. Their relative, the Wood Bison, ranged across Canada and Alaska. A newborn calf weighs an average of 44 pounds; they can grow to an average of 1600 pounds as adults. Bison live an average of 10-20 years. They can jump high fences, are strong swimmers, and can run up to 35 miles per hour. Bison once numbered over 30 million across North America. Over hunting brought their numbers down to a few hundred by the end of the 19th Century. Today, conservation efforts have brought them back to approximately 362,000 across North America.
Yellowstone National Park is the only place where bison have lived continuously since prehistoric times.
In 2016 the Bison was named the National Mammal for the United States
