Welcome to the former Loch Raven Picnic area. The road will take you down towards the water to a loop road where there used to be a place for picnics. If you care to search through the thorns. you might come across vestiges of the old concrete bases for the tables that were spead out down here. There are still signs along the shore that warn against wading, swimming and ice skating. I could not locate any pictures from the time when this area was in use. Apparently there was an issue with keeping people out of the water, and vandalism was a regular occurence. Eventually the area was closed off to vehicles (some time in the mid 1970s, as far as I can determine). Now it is open to hikers and hunters.
The road is still here, so hiking is generally easy with only a slight downhill towards the point. When you get to the loop there are side trails that take you down to the water. There is a trail that takes you within about 25 feet of the hide. The short bushwhack to GZ is a bit thorny, but manageable. To the northwest you can see the Loch Raven Boat Center. You could use a watercraft to get to GZ if desired.
The hike from parking and back is about 1.65 miles. This is a popular trail for canines to exercise their humans. Please rehide as well or better than found. The hide is a common woodland type hide. There are several other caches in the area, as well. Available dawn to dusk.
NOTE: Hunting may be permitted here September to January (Archery). Please wear clothing that ensures you are visible and be respectful if you encounter hunters.
