I've been seeing this sign every time I drive from Old Hickory to Madison, and felt it would be a good place for a cache.
Please replace exactly as found so the cache remains hidden and protected from the weather.
There is a wide shoulder and you can park right close to the sign either by pulling off on the side road, a short walk from the sign, or pulling off on to the shoulder. Be advised that traffic comes around that corner quite fast, so please use caution when pulling back on to main road.
The Cumberland River forms the boundary between Madison and Old Hickory. The fine stately bridge that crosses the river has an interesting history. The older span was completed in 1928, and the "swinging" bridge, which was located a mile up river, was then demolished. The newer span opened in 1967 when Rte 45 was widened to four lanes. A section of Rte 45 was part of the Trail of Tears, when Members of the Cherokee Nation were directed to be moved to Oklahoma. That tragedy was performed under the direction of President Andrew Jackson. Rte 45 passes directly in front of the Presidential Plantation, Andrew Jackson's home. The mansion and grounds are well worth a visit, and if you go, be sure to log another smiley. A cache that I placed for everyone to enjoy is waiting for you at the front entrance.
