Geocache Description:

This cache will take you to a couple buildings that are on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Merizo Conbento is a historic building on Guam Route 4 in Merizo, Guam. Built in 1856, it is the oldest known occupied building on the island. It is a two-story concrete and ifil-wood structure with a gabled corrugated-metal roof, and a large set of concrete stairs leading to the main level above a raised basement. The present-day exterior is a faithful representation of the building's original appearance (with the exception of the roofing material, and original walls of manposteria (coral mixed with lime) remain inside the structure. It was built as a parish house for the local Roman Catholic diocese, and saw use as a military post and prison during the Japanese occupation period during World War II.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

The Merizo Bell Tower, also on Guam Highway 4 in Merizo, Guam, is a bell tower that was built in 1914 or 1919. The tower is 24 ft tall and sits on a 13 ft. square base; it is built of a "heavy masonry called manposteria consisting of stone with mortar covered with cement plaster". The tower is significant for association with a Catholic priest, Father Cristobal de Canals, who built the bell tower and a church and took many steps to promote agriculture and raise the standard of living in the village of Merizo. Architecturally, the tower symbolizes transition between colonial Spanish architecture and more modern methods; a major element of its design is its massing. It was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

Along with these Historic Monuments are two more recently made structures that are very unique. They may never get on the National Historic Places list, but they are a sight to see! I'll leave the surprise for you when you get there.

Although not required to log the cache, I highly support the posting of pictures of you with these unique structures.

I hope you enjoy the location.
