By the late 1600s and early 1700s, a series of batteries was estabished on the north and south sides of St. John's Harbour to protect it from advances from the French, other European countries, and pirates. Earlier batteries were built by residents themselves. Frederick's Battery was built in Frederick's Cove around 1669.
Frederick's Battery was useful in times of attack, particularly against several attacks from the French between the 1690's and 1790's. However, the battery often fell into disrepair due to neglect and exposure to the harsh elements so close to the open Atlantic. It usually received some restoration and maintenance when England felt threatened.
Frederick's Cove is one of the last remaining natural coves in St. John's Harbour. Most others have been taken over by harbour development.
