Kevvie the Koala:

Here are some things you might like to know about me.
I have Special Raincoat! It is a thick woolly fur which protects me from both the heat and the cold. It acts like a 'raincoat' so I do not get wet when it rains. My fur varies in colour from light grey to brown, with white patches on my chest and neck and on the insides of my arms, legs and ears. Neat! Can you beat this? - the fur on my butt is thickly packed to make a 'cushion' for the hard branches I sit on. It has a speckled look which makes me hard to see from the ground. Neat-O!
I am mostly nocturnal, meaning I am generally sleeping during the heat of the day and being awake during the night and at dawn and dusk. I sleep a lot more than you. I spend about 18 to 21 hours each day sleeping or resting. This is how I save energy. That means I am active only 3 to 6 hours a day.
Here’s something really cool: I can sit and sleep in many different positions, sometimes curled up, sometimes dangling.
Hey, I also have Two Thumbs on each of my front paws. That’s so I can hold tightly on to the branches and also grip my food. I have really sharp claws, too. On my hind paw, or foot, there is no claw on the big toe and the second and third toes are joined together to form a special claw, which I can use for scratching and for removing ticks. Yeah – YUK!
BUT I can’t see very well (not so cool), so I use my sense of smell and hearing to help me survive in the bush. Have you wondered about my large nose? It is covered with black leathery skin and is very sensitive so I can sniff the gum leaves to decide which ones I like and which are safe to eat.
When I see another Koala, I can make a range of loud bellowing and snorting sounds, as well as using scent. My mother and I made soft grunts and clicking, squeaking and humming sounds to talk to each other. We’re cool!
