Geocache Description:

This cache is an update of the original Barge Ass (GC36C62)  placed by Poiter.h and Jimmymaff.  Barge Ass was adopted by Fredd01 in April 2022 and given a slight tweak.

The story of the Lady Harriet Barge: Built around 1895 as a cargo barge for the river steamer Lady Harriet, the barge was one of four.

From 1895 – 1912 - This old vessel plied the Tambo River to the port of Mossiface with provisions and equipment for the goldfields. On the return trip, it would load up with all sorts of farm produce destined for Melbourne.

From 1912 – 1929 - The Barge was bought by the public works department to be used as a fresh water carrier.

From 1929 – 1938 - The barge was converted to carry granite blocks for the entrance. From about 1935 the barge was engaged in carrying stone to reinforce the breakwaters around the Lakes. During this period the barge was towed by a number of vessels - the Queen, the Avon and the Tambo which were all owned by the Public Works Department. When the Colquhoun quarry closed, the rock was sourced from Granit Rock and transported by road.

From 1938 – 1995 - Lady Herriet lay derelict in Paynesville shipyards for many years until acquired in 1988 by Robert and Pamela Elliot. Despite their best intentions the Elliot’s were unable to maintain or restore the barge so it languished in the mud off Bullock Island. In 1993 the barge was donated to the Lakes Entrance Historical Society who initiated a project to relocate and restore it.
