MEET-AND-GREET at OLD TOWN SCHOOL

Saturday, May 21st

9:30 am - 10:00 am

Cachers from Middle Georgia are heading down to the Suwannee! We plan to walk the nearby Nature Coast Trail out to the RR trestle at Old Town, and we would love to meet up with some local cachers beforehand while we are in town!

This will be just a half-hour parking lot meet-and-greet at Old Town School, home of the Dixie County Historical Museum. The museum is temporarily closed, but we will gather by the historical marker. We can trade signature items and swag, share about the area, and just enjoy visiting and talking all things CACHE! Feel free to bring trackables you'd like us to move along.

May 2022 is actually the 100th anniversary of the City of Hawkinsville steamboat being scuttled in the Suwannee River at Old Town. Hawkinsville (on the Ocmulgee River, where the steamboat originated) is our neighboring town in Middle Georgia - we share a connection with Old Town across the waterways! So after the meet-and-greet ends, we are going to walk the trail to the river to see where the City of Hawkinsville lies in the water - you are welcome to join us on the 3/4 mile walk (trailhead is about a mile north of our event), but it is not necessary - the event is just the parking lot gathering from 9:30-10:00 am. If you decide to walk with us, remember your bug spray, sunscreen, and water bottle.

Note: The museum is closed for now, but it houses relics from the City of Hawkinsville wreckage, along with a scale model of the steamboat.

This event is all about the two main reasons we geocache: 1) the amazing places we go and 2) the amazing people we meet! Hope you will stop by Saturday morning on May 21st - we look forward to it!

EDIT 5/3/22: The Museum staff will have the building OPEN just for us that morning!! Make plans to come inside and learn more about the history of Old Town, and particularly, the City of Hawkinsville steamboat, after our meet-and-greet!
