Attenzione!!! Il Cassero non è sempre aperto al pubblico! Durante l'estate è aperto dalle 10 alle 19, in inverno dalle 10 alle 17. L'ingresso è gratuito.
In prossimità di Poggibonsi sorge un'imponente corona muraria. Si tratta del perimetro esterno della Fortezza medicea costruita agli inizi del millecinquecento per volontà di Lorenzo il Magnifico. Il progetto non fu portato a pieno compimento e pertanto non venne realizzato il nucleo urbano previsto al suo interno. Venne invece edificato il Cassero, a pianta pentagonale, che oggi, restaurato, domina i colli circostanti. Il Cassero, unico in Toscana, è un'imponente opera di fortificazione a pianta pentagonale, inseribile in un rettangolo dotato ai quattro vertici di bastioni, che riprende la forma antropomorfa teorizzata da Francesco di Giorgio Martini per la "città ideale". La sua costruzione (1505-1510) prese avvio con l'edificazione del fronte bastionato, dotato di un'unica porta d'ingresso e di due torrioni laterali. Dalla porta si accede ad un lungo corridoio d'ingresso e alla sala d'armi e, da lì, si arriva infine in una vasta area a cielo aperto, la piazza d'armi, luogo dove si svolgono numerosi eventi e manifestazioni.
L'intera sommità della collina di Poggio Imperiale, che sovrasta il centro abitato di Poggibonsi, rappresenta un esempio straordinario nel processo di formazione del paesaggio e dell'insediamento umano nelle colline della Toscana centrale. Lo scavo archeologico, condotto dal 1993 al 2009 a cura dell'Insegnamento di Archeologia Medievale dell'Università di Siena, ha messo in luce una storia millenaria, molto più antica rispetto alle attestazioni delle fonti documentarie che menzionano per la prima volta il sito attorno alla metà del XII secolo.

Near Poggibonsi there is an imposing crown of walls. This is the outer perimeter of the Medici Fortress built at the beginning of the fifteenth century by the will of Lorenzo the Magnificent. The project was not fully completed and therefore the urban nucleus envisaged within it was not built. Instead, the Cassero was built, with a pentagonal plan, which today, restored, dominates the surrounding hills. The Cassero, unique in Tuscany, is an imposing pentagonal fortification work, which can be inserted in a rectangle with bastions at the four vertices, which takes up the anthropomorphic form theorized by Francesco di Giorgio Martini for the "ideal city". Its construction (1505-1510) began with the construction of the bastion front, equipped with a single entrance door and two lateral towers. From the door you enter a long entrance corridor and the arms room and, from there, you finally arrive in a large open-air area, the parade ground, a place where numerous events and demonstrations take place. The entire summit of the Poggio Imperiale hill, which overlooks the town of Poggibonsi, represents an extraordinary example in the process of landscape formation and human settlement in the hills of central Tuscany. The archaeological excavation, conducted from 1993 to 2009 by the Teaching of Medieval Archeology of the University of Siena, has brought to light a millenary history, much older than the attestations of the documentary sources that mention for the first time the site around the mid 12th century.
