La Fonte delle Fate è l’unica delle sei fonti di Poggibonsi arrivata fino ai giorni nostri. Venne costruita nel XIII sec. e poi coperta nel XV sec. durante la costruzione della Fortezza Medicea di Poggio Imperiale. Nel 1803 venne riportata alla luce durante i lavori per la realizzazione di un vigneto.
Secondo la teoria più accreditata, la Fonte delle Fate venne realizzata da Balugano da Crema, un architetto lombardo vissuto nell’XIII sec. che oggi dà il nome alla strada in salita da prendere per raggiungere questo luogo magico.
Nel 1850 uno studioso del luogo, Attilio Ciaspini, ha trovato la prova che attribuisce proprio a lui quest’opera singolare in una “cronaca anonima della Sapienza di Siena”, che risale al XIII secolo, registrata in un documento di fine 1500.
La fonte è realizzata in travertino e presenta sei arcate doppie a sesto acuto, sostenute da pilastri di grande spessore, all’interno dei quali vennero realizzate delle piccole arcate per facilitare l’attività di scolo delle acque in arrivo dal poggio soprastante.
Si affaccia su un ampio spiazzo dove si trova anche un abbeveratoio per animali.
Il nome che le è stato attribuito dalla tradizione popolare si riferisce alle antiche credenze secondo le quali le acque, le sorgenti e le paludi erano luoghi ambigui, protetti da strane creature.
Ai tempi degli etruschi si parla di “Lasa”, esseri assimilabili alle classiche ninfe, mentre in seguito si parla di fate, figure probabilmente ispirate all’immagine della dama, considerate le signore buone della magia che proteggono le acque buone, ovvero quelle sorgive. Le streghe malefiche, al contrario, si trovano in prossimità di acque “negative”, le paludi.
La Fonte delle Fate ospita un’opera d’arte contemporanea di Mimmo Paladino,“I Dormienti”, realizzata nel 1998. Si tratta di numerose sculture in terracotta che ritraggono coccodrilli e Uomini in posizione fetale, adagiate su tavole rettangolari di ferro scuro: più piccoli per i coccodrilli, larghi per gli uomini. Ciascuno dei “Dormienti” è stato posato nell’invaso di raccolta delle acque della fonte. La Fonte delle Fate viene alimentata dall’acqua che filtra dal terreno sovrastante e il livello dell’acqua cambia a seconda della piovosità.

The Fonte delle Fate is the only one of the six sources of Poggibonsi that has survived to the present day.
