L’Osservatorio Polifunzionale del Chianti è una struttura scientifica dedicata alla ricerca, alla didattica e alla divulgazione, alla promozione della cultura scientifica, con sede a San Donato in Poggio, nel comune di Barberino Val d’Elsa. La struttura sia articola in quattro sottostrutture di ricerca: l’osservatorio Astronomico, quello Ambientale, quello Meteorologico ed infine il Parco Botanico del Chianti.
All’interno della sua cupola è custodito e manovrato il telescopio Marcon che con i suoi 80 cm è il telescopio più grande della Toscana. Oltre ad esso, l’osservatorio ha in dotazione anche altri telescopi più piccoli con cui vengono condotti incontri della sezione astrofili nonché esposizioni in ambito divulgativo. Prima del Marcon, il telescopio nella cupola era un Celestron C14, proveniente dall’Osservatorio Astrofisico di Arcetri. Le attività scientifiche qui condotte sono principalmente nell’ambito fotometrico, nello studio del transito di esopianeti e stelle variabili. Vari ragazzi del Dipartimento di Fisica ed Astronomia sono venuti proprio all’OPC per condurre le misure necessarie per il proprio lavoro di tesi triennale o magistrale.
L’Osservatorio Meteorologico è dotato di una stazione meteo wireless professionale, affiancata da una stazione agrometeorologica che fornisce dati meteo utili per migliorare la coltivazione vitivinicola a favore della qualità, in quanto gli interventi sulle piante conseguenti alla conoscenza dei parametri meteo evitano l’uso di fitofarmaci e migliorano la qualità del prodotto. La stazione sismica INGV monitora l’oscillazione del terreno attraverso dei sensori posti in un pozzetto a tre metri di profondità.
Oltre alla ricerca scientifica e l’istruzione universitaria, l’Osservatorio Polifunzionale del Chianti è centro di attività divulgativa, orientata sia verso le scuole di ogni ordine e grado, sia verso i più grandi. Vengono periodicamente organizzate visite guidate e conferenze a carattere didattiche.

The Osservatorio Polifunzionale del Chianti is a scientific structure dedicated to research, teaching and dissemination, and the promotion of scientific culture. It is located in San Donato in Poggio, in the municipality of Barberino Val d'Elsa. The structure is divided into four research substructures: the Astronomical Observatory, the Environmental Observatory, the Meteorological Observatory and finally the Chianti Botanical Park.
The Marcon telescope, which is the largest telescope in Tuscany at 80 cm, is housed and operated inside its dome. In addition to this, the observatory also has other smaller telescopes that are used for meetings of the astronomy section and for public exhibitions. Before the Marcon, the telescope in the dome was a Celestron C14, from the Osservatorio Astrofisico di Arcetri. The scientific activities conducted here are mainly in the field of photometry with the study of the transit of exoplanets and variable stars. Several students from the Department of Physics and Astronomy have come to the OPC to carry out the measurements necessary for their bachelor or master's theses.
The Meteorological Observatory is equipped with a professional wireless weather station, flanked by an agro-meteorological station that provides weather data useful for improving winegrowing in favour of quality, since interventions on the plants following knowledge of the weather parameters avoid the use of plant protection products and improve the quality of the product. The INGV seismic station monitors the oscillation of the ground through sensors placed in a well at a depth of three metres.
In addition to scientific research and university education, the Chianti Multifunctional Observatory is a centre for popular activities, aimed both at schools of all levels and at adults. Guided tours and educational conferences are regularly organised.
