The creation of Ambleside College
Charlotte Mason (1842 - 1923) was a British educator who invested her life in improving the quality of childrens education. She had a vision for 'a liberal education for all' as in the early 1800s children were educated according to social class. Shde moved to Ambleside in 1891 and formed the House of Education, a training school for governesses and others working with young children. In 1894 the main base moved to Scale How (the big white building) and Charlotte resided there. Student numbers rose and Charlotte continued to write profusely, refining her philosophy of education. This site still remains an educational facility even after her death in 1923.
