West Midlands 2022
Fauld Explorer Trail
We're approaching the Faulds Crater area now.
The area around and in the crater are strictly off limits — stick to the paths.
Beneath your feet, during the Second World War, the RAF stored high explosive munitions in the gypsum mines.
After the explosion in 1943, an unknown number of vey high explosives were scattered and buried, and left lying around. It was deemed far to expensive and unsafe to attempt recovery of such unstable and lethal material, and so the land and woods around here have been left for nature to reclaim.

The land any distance from the tracks has been largely untouched since 1944.
No solo exploring – stick to the paths! Instead, let's keep going and find out more about the event.
