Howlong Bridges
This is a series based on the bridges from Howlong heading south into Victoria.
Except for #1, all others are on the left hand side going south.
Please be very careful about where you stop. Some require a bit of a walk.
They would probably be easier to collect by bike.
The NSW Murray River Bridge History
In July 1857 Mr Thomas Allan operated a punt crossing the river, later followed by Mr Ferdinand Rutzou. In 1876 the local member for Parliament, George Day advocated for a bridge to “add another link to the chain of Federation”.
In early 1885, the NSW and Victorian Governments agreed to share the cost.
The bridge was completed in 1885 for a cost of 3,500 pounds for the bridge and 3,000 pounds for the approaches. The main bridge is 76 metres long with three 22.8 metre long spans. The bridge was officially opened on 21st October 1887.
The KITCHENERS BRIDGE: I can only assume that this bridge is named after Lord Kitchener, Who was the Commander-in-Chief of the British Army at the time of his visit to Australia.
At the invitation of Prime Minister Alfred Deakin, Kitchener visited Australia in 1909 to inspect the existing state of defence preparedness of the Commonwealth, and advise on the best means of providing Australia with a land defence. Kitchener’s report, submitted in February 1910, recommended the introduction of compulsory military training which was immediately adopted, as was the establishment of the Military College, Duntroon.
He is also famous for lending his countanence to the recuitment poster 'Your Country Needs You'.
