MURTOA.
Murtoa is situated in the heart of the Wimmera with the Grampians as a stunning backdrop.
In 1872 German settlers were attracted to Marma Gully by the presence of Lake Marma, a reliable water source to help grow their wheat crops. The locality was renamed Murtoa when the township was surveyed in 1873. The name is thought to have been derived from an Aboriginal word meaning 'home of the lizard' from the Jaadwa language. Many large lizard sculptures feature around the centre of town.
The small wheatbelt town is home to a number of important local industries and the only National Heritage Listing in the Wimmera - The Stick Shed. The Murtoa No.1 Grain Store has been included in the National Heritage List as the only remaining emergency grain store built during World War II. It is an enduring testament to iconic Australian bush ingenuity and a symbol of the growth and strength of the Australian wheat industry.
Murtoa is rich in history which other Heritage listed attractions are a testament to. This Adventure Lab will take you to just a few of those historical locations, highlighting the architecture and the farming history.
