Beauty may seem most ready at hand in nature, yet the logic constitutive of beauty appears to tie esthetic value to the domain of rational agency. Whereas merely prosaic things have their significance owing to some general functions or properties equally shared by different exemplars, an object of beauty exhibits a fundamental unity of meaning and configuration, where the unique detail of its individual appearance is indispensable to its esthetic worth. This joining of meaning and shape entails a concrete universality where the universal and the individual are so interconnected that the individual has an exemplary significance that cannot be expressed apart from the individual´s idiosyncratic being. By contrast, the abstract universality of shared features or class identity leaves undetermined what distinguishes the instances to which it applies, just as generic universality determines the differentia of its species without accounting for what individuates their members. In such brands of universality, one universal can be indifferently exhibited in a multiplicity of examples, whose individuating character in no way contributes to how well they exemplify the universal. Beauty, on the other hand, has a meaning that cannot be detached from the universal shape of its manifestations, rendering its universality irreducibly concrete.
