Apedale is a 454 acre country park. Formerly an open cast mine, the area has now been turned into this vast country park, with a mix of open areas and woodland. With varied terrain, and some wide, hardstanding paths the park provides trails for everyone. The lower visitors’ centre includes a café, mine tours and a steam train, whilst the upper visitors’ centre focusses on the environment.
Some areas of Apedale are conservation areas, other areas are liable to sudden ground movement because of the mine workings, therefore it is imperative that you do not cross any fences, or stray from the paths.
This is one of the places where you can feel the history of the area. Look at the ground you are walking on. Although nature is doing its best to reclaim the site, you will notice here you are walking on tarmac, and if you look closely, in places you can still see the white lines and studs in the road. Formerly a road into a colliery, this is now a footpath, linking Black Bank Road with Silverdale Country Park. If doing this cache from one of the Apedale car parks, please take care crossing the road, as it is a 60mph road.
