Welcome to the Golden Valley County Extension Office Geocache Treasure Hunt. If you attempt this treasure hunt you will learn a little bit about North Dakota history by visiting a couple of historic information signs. After viewing the signs and gathering clues you will be able to find the final cache location. The final cache will contain an entry form you can fill out and take to the Extension Office at 53 Central Ave South.. Entries will be accepted until July 2nd. The final drawing will be held on July 6th. The lucky winner will receive 2 tickets to the Medora Musical donated by the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation.
So let's get started by going to the Stage 1 coordinates listed above. Here you will find a sign describing a famous expedition which traveled through this area. The year will be the clue to find Stage 2.. Year XXXX = ABCD. Stage 2 is at N 46 54.(D+A)(A+B)(D) W 104 00.(A+B-D)(A+C-D)(B-C).
After performing the calculations, proceed to Stage 2 where you will see a sign describing an important event that occurred near ths site. This happened Sept XXXX. XXXX=EFGH. The final cache is at N 46 55.(E+G)(E-G)(H) W 104 00.(F-E)(G)(F-E-G).
Upon arrival at the final location you might encounter a closed gate. You can park at the listed parking spot and walk through the fence opening and the find final cache is a short distance away.
I hope you enjoy the history lessons and the treasure hunt.
